The fight continues.

During the fight, Thorngrim manages to kill a Nalfashnee almost by himself and Naurak takes down a greater air elemental himself. Gentoo convinced Kaelvar to see the light of justice and help the Companions again. Surina and Tzira dispatch the elemental apostles and kill the traitor, Dak.

At the end of the battle, the Lady of Pain arrives and offers a boon for being responsible for her release – they ask her to allow the portal to Carceri to re-open, but a sacrifice is still required: Naurak volunteers and impales himself before anyone can stop him.

Reuniting, the Companions split up: Surina is left back in Sigil as she remains unconscious and the Falcon and Chance join the party. Mirana warns that the Raven Queen is under attack in the Shadowfell, besieged by the forces of Orcus.

Following the tracks of Irinuk and Vadalgo, the Companions find that the landscape of Carceri has turned to flesh, and even part of the Black Gate is flesh now.

Arriving at the Gate, the Companions find Vadalgo and Irinuk engaged in a ritual.

Combat ensues!

During the fight, the Falcon manages to destroy Machtiel with Calenbrin, releasing the angels within.

Chance and Thorngrim both fall during the fight as well, but the rest of the Companions are able to escape, after having given Aban Aldorian the Orb so he could jump into the gate to seal it from the inside. Irinuk and Vadalgo also both fell during the battle.

Back in the Raven Queen’s keep, the armies of Orcus and Vecna broke through her defenses, assaulting her inner fortress while the dead Companions (Thorngrim, Naurak, Surina) try to fight the evil forces. They were able to save the Raven Queen, in the end. She restored them to life so they could continue their work.

Gentoo is almost corrupted by Tharizdun’s influence (allowing him to return to the world), but he manages to overcome it.

And they all lived happily ever after.

Inathriumkavendil launches into a traditional immortal soliloquy about the pain of seeing everyone he love die, and then…

Combat ensued!

During the fight, Gentoo’s honeyed tongue and Surina’s fierce temper was able to convince Inathrumkavendil that another kindred still lives, convincing him to turn against the tulgar and fight against Neverdusk to redeem himself. He also hints that he does not have long to try to redeem himself…

Inathriumkavendil revealed that he made a deal long ago with Aban Aldorian for a power that could save his people. All of his people died when Bane slew their god. Aban apparently told him the Golden Orb of Baramas could restore his race. He thought Aban had betrayed him and Inathriumkavendil made a deal with the rhavaasta Shemeshka the Marauder to get his revenge. He knew that allying with Shemeshka meant gaining power from (and for) Tharizdun.

He also explains that Vidalgo already left with the blood of Aoskar for Carceri, heading to a gate there to release Tharizdun. he reinforces the protections on the orb, utters a final few warnings, and dissolves into ash.

In the next chamber, we find an empty platinum basin – and the doors slam shut, mystical symbols lining the walls. A voice calls out, naming the Companions blasphemers and intruders. They manage to convince the voice that they aren’t evil, and the voice reveals that Aoskar was killed by all the gods – he created the door to Tharizdun’s prison, and was killed for knowing how to open it again. The Lady of Pain was once a god, but gave up her divinity after he was killed.

Aoskar gives the Companions his blood, telling them to drink of it and achieve their destinies. Each of them begins to feel a new awareness with the cosmos and the blood of Aoskar courses through them.

The Falcon and her crew teleport in and the Companions explain the situation to them. Melody is able to see Inathriumkavendil and Garheart analyzes the obsidian woodpecker to determine that it can undo some of the past.

The Companions explain their plan to the Falcon, tasking her with freeing the Lady of Pain while they attempt to stop Tharizdun’s escape.

The Companion’s use the tunnel Inathriumkavendil burned into the temple to arise back to the Palace of Pain. They notice a cranium rat scuttling across the floor, and that the apartment is clean of all personal effects. They also notice some canine footsteps, perhaps fox-feet…

Storming into the Temple to the Abyss, the Companions easily dispatch assorted demons that try to stop them. In the chamber beyond, they find a welcoming party: a nalfashnee, an efreet wielding the sword (axe) of Kas, an airsoul genasi, a stone giant, Vidalgo Lassar, the rhavaasta Kuniri/Shemeshka and Dax, the githzerai in our crew. Kaelvar and his sister are tied up against the wall with enormous, spiked pendulums poised to crush them both.

Kuniri commands the Companions to stop and choose which one will die, but Gentoo fae-switched with Kaelvar to rescue him, and Kuniri dropped the pendulums on them both.

Combat ensued!

And was even more complicated when Surina and Tzira leapt through the portal to Carceri – and the portal closed on them, dividing the party…

Garshan left a note and a package with several items, including 800 gp, Heward’s Handy Haversack and information and supplies to retrieve Aoskar’s blood and return to the Skyrock School.

Phantasmal abberrants keep coalescing and Thorngrim destroyed them before they could solidify while the rest of the Companions gathered up the 7 oldest minotaur skulls (along with a rakshasha skull that attracted their attention), and then Gentoo opened a portal back to the docks.

When Surina took the Orb through the portal, the creatures stopped coalescing and the light in the cracks dimmed significantly.

(On the way, the Companions stocked up on adventurer’s packs and other supplies, spending a total of 300 gp)

The Companions bring the skulls to the Master of Bones and he examines the skulls, getting very excited when he determined which skull was from the high priest. Questioning the skull, he’s is surprised and incredulous when he finds out how the temple fell…

He says that the temple is in a corner of the Lower Ward, below the House of Zidara or Hall of Giants. The Master of Bones pledged to not share this information with Vidalgo Lassar, in light of the Companions’ generosity with the skulls. They also asked him about the other items and forces they’re working against, but he didn’t have much to share.

The Companions deliver a new crown to the Wererat King, confirming that the abberrant creatures from the depths appeared when the Lady of Pain disappeared, and also explained that many people don’t want the Lady to return: Shemeshka the Marauder, Estavan, Jeremo the Natterer, Zidara, and a variety of other factions.

Hearing that Zidara apparently has a representative of the Aldorian family in her house, the Companions formulate a plan to introduce themselves to her, hoping to use the Redwater Guild’s association with her rival Shemeshka the Marauder to convince her to work with them.

But they visit a magical forge first to talk with an old dwarf that Osric knew. He revealed that Shemeshka the Marauder is a rhavaasta (like Kuniri), and he also explained that he came from anther world called Krynn that had it’s own black stone gates. His people had used the Hammer of Karas to destroy the gates, but that caused a great explosion the sucked him into Sigil.

The Companions then get an enchanted courier to deliver a message only to Zidara (for 500 gp – 12,762 gp remaining) about how they suspect that the Aldorian representatives are dopplegangers in service to the Redwater Guild (and thus Shemeshka).

Alex finds out about another rhavaasta in town: A’kinn, the owner of the Friendly Fiend (a magic item emporium), often gives out information but never answers questions about himself. The Companions decide to visit him to ask their usual questions. He talks them in circles until finally giving them a small statuette. An onyx figurine of a woodpecker, which Thorngrim takes.

They also go to the tattoo parlor to get a magical tattoo (fleet hero tattoo, 12,712 gp remaining).

Returning to the inn, the Companions find a note from Zidara saying “come immediately.” Visiting her, the Companions find her in the company of Aban Aldorian…

Zidara doesn’t ally with the characters simply because they oppose the Redwater Guild (and Shemeshka), but she does agree to allow them access to the Shattered Temple in exchange for some of the blood of Aoskar. The Companions agree, so long as she doesn’t turn around and sell it to Vidalgo Lassar.

Aban then explains more of what’s going on to the Companions. Machtiel was an angel of Tharizdun, while Calinbrin was an angel of an unknown god – Tharizdun’s brother. Calinbrin sacrificed himself to seal Machtiel, to prevent the angel from freeing the Chained God. Aban also explained that the Aldorian family has long served as part of the Order of Vigilance, keeping watchful eye against the machinations of Tharizdun.

Aban then talks a lot but says very little.

He also gives the Companions the First Mirror, which shows the truth of things. Naurak takes it, but everyone takes a moment to look at their own reflection. Gentoo sees himself younger, and not a vampire. Surina just sees herself. Tzira sees a full moon on a black sky. Thorngrim sees an open cage. Naurak sees his corpse, his weapon split and a huge slash down the front of his body.

Zidara returns with a vessel for Aoskar’s blood and the Companions descend below her manor. She leads them into a chamber filled with statues of the Lady of Pain. She says that solving the riddle of this chamber is the key to Aoskar’s temple.

Defeating several puzzles, the Companions ultimately found themselves in an Escer-esque room with mirrors one each wall of the “cube”. Mirror-like creatures step out of them.

Combat ensues!

Finding a trapdoor in the ceiling, the Companions follow a corridor to another mirror – and also a portion of the wall had been excavated from the outside. The mirror leads to another hall of mirrors and more riddles/puzzles.

Penetrating into the final reaches of the temple, the Companions find Inathriumkavendil and a band of mercenary tulgar, waiting for them.

The Companions ask their crew if they know anything about Orb of Baramas, but none of them know much. Mirana explained that Aban Aldorian had been searching for it back when she was an adventurer – they had all been searching for it to fulfill their dreams. Marek was able to confirm that the Orb is unlikely to be Tharizdun’s prison, but it might be a part of it or a key.

The Companions traveled to Sigil, appearing near the docks extended up from the surface of the city, and they were met by an imposing marut who demands a 20,000 gp docking fee. Unable to pay and faced with the impounding of their ship, the Companions are approached by Garshan, a representative of the Skyrock School of Arcane Studies, who offers to buy out the docking fee debt in exchange for some services. They all go to the Twelve Factols to discuss the details.

Garshan hires the Companions to find the Shattered Temple and recover the blood of Aoskar – and Vidalgo Lassar is also looking for the temple and blood.

The Companions also realize that Alex (Alexandra from the Gloomwrought Harskells) had followed them from Gloomrot. A quick disguise helped conceal her identity.

Garshan does some divination rituals to find the temple, gathering mention of the “Master of Bones” who is also searching for the Temple. Surina, Tzira, Alex and Garshan head to the Lower Ward to investigate the Master of Bones (Lothar the Old) while Thorngrim and Naurak attempt to find Vidalgo Lassar’s agents and observe them.

Thorngrim and Naurak find that Vidalgo is apparently the representative of the continent of Kesslin. They weren’t particularly welcome, but at least are able to figure out which room he’s supposed to be in.

The rest of the Companions head to the Master of Bones, taking a ladder in a hole in the ground leading to a cavernous library well below ground where they find a were-rat and an old, bearded man. They make a deal to share whatever they find with him, and he tells them about the temple.

Once the Temple to Aoskar, the god of gates, it was destroyed by the Lady of Pain. The priests were among the first thrown down into the ditch. If the Companions can recover the skeleton of Shekelor, the last high priest, the Master of Bones might be able to get more information on the temple.

The Master of Bones also explains that the Lady of Pain disappeared 9 months ago – when the temporal disturbance was caused in Delos.

Heading to an inn in the Market Ward, the Companions find their old friend Kaelvar playing dice in a tavern. Tzira attacks him with a hug and barely avoids being instinctively attacked. Apparently he is hunting Vadalgo, of course, but hasn’t been able to find him.

Resting for the evening and heading back to the Master of Bones to be lead to the bottom of the Ditch in the Hive, meeting with Tattershade, the king of were-rats. The Companions promise him a “regal appearance” if they all come back alive.

The Companions follow the rivers of caustic chemicals deeper into the pit, coming to hole where all the flows fall deeper underground, finding a bebelith waiting for prey.

Combat ensues!

After defeating the bebelith, the Companions go down the hole to find Sigil is built on the material of the gates. The “Golden Orb of Baramas” began to glow, illuminating hairline cracks in the black stone, which start to glow themselves. Six beholders begin to coalesce out of the light.

Combat ensues!

During the fight, the Orb whispers promises of power to Surina, and then Tzira when she refused it.

Gasharn was petrified during the fight, but his familiar teleported him back to the school, leaving instructions and details for the remaining tasks with Surina.

Yes. 2 gp remaining.

The Companions decide that they will try to turn the mad sage into the Deathless Guard, judging him to be dangerously insane. They spread out and search the tower.

In the main laboratory/study, the Companions find:
  • a missive about how Vecna is really a misunderstood good guy, with some singed fingermarks on the side, undernearth it was a rung with a firey symbol with an eye in it (magic item that provides resists 10 fire and necrotic)
  • information about the five children of the Widow of the Walk, including the willow staff that belonged to Stacey (the staff can perform comrade’s succor once per day)
In the rooms the next floor up, they find:
  • a disheveled, robed human with a symbol of Ioun laying on the floor, barely alive
  • another cleric of Ioun, this time an elf, also unconscious under some kind of spell
  • a human scholar
  • a “friendly” gnome (Fortank) who was, surprisingly, conscious and happy to be rescued. Something is off about the way he moves, though… apparently he is “interacting” strangely with time, moving quickly and then slowly

The notes about the Widow and her children: _Speculation on the Widow of the Walk and the Secret of Gloomwrought

The Widow alone knows Gloomwrought’s secret, the truth of what the Well of Shadows is, and the nature of its strange connection to Prince Rolan. However, she is a hostile spirit, attacking any who approach her walk. The only way to subdue the spirit is to bring the relics of her dead children to her, but these objects are pieces in the collections of nobles, most of whom would like nothing better than to destroy the others.

Alain: A berserker, Alain carried a massive greataxe engraved with images of dragon talons. Possessed by Rolan.

Brandis: A valiant commander, Brandis wore a distinctive adamantine helmet that sported a plume made from a nightmare’s tail. Possessed by Olisk Carradh

Cassi: A fierce master of unarmed combat, Cassi wore a crystal-studded headband that helped her focus and strike unerringly. Possessed by Dedrek Harskel.

Pieter: A spy and assassin, Pieter mastered the art of poisonmaking. He delivered his concoctions with a long needle he concealed in his sleeve. Location unknown.

Staci: A late bloomer, Staci came into her own through study. She mastered battle magic and crafted a willow staff with which to channel her spells. Acquired._

Fortank, the “Tinkerer of Time,” tells the Companions that they are still not back to “normal time.” He uses an analog of time and a tree and birds, ultimately telling the Companions that they are like the “Woodpeckers of Time.” He then left to return to his studies, not really wanting to deal with the Deathless Guard.

He does confirm that the sage was pulling knowledge from his victims’ minds and Gentoo uses the sage’s machine to transfer knowledge back into the comatose bodies. Waking the victims up, they reveal they had all come to Gloomwrought to take advantage of the library… The female human sage explained that she was studying Pandemonium, which contains a tower of Vecna. The priests of Ioun weren’t studying anything particularly notable.

The Companions kill the insane eladrin scholar and destroy his machine, turning the library over to the priests of Ioun to manage.

Resting that night, Gentoo is awoken by his pulsating orb, glowing and whispering “more…” Checking, the starspawn contained within it before is gone.

Thorngrim is also woken up by someone stuffing a scroll under his door. The scroll was wrapped around a long, 10” needle. The parchment itself says “Olisk Karrad is not what he appears. Aid him and you aid evil.” The needle can be used to apply a magic tattoo to one character of level 20 or lower.

The next morning, under the weight of the usual gloom of the city, the Companions get a message from Bella. She said she couldn’t make us couriers, but we do have her favor. She gave us a +4 cloak of the chirurgeon (given to Gentoo).

On the way to the ball the next day, the Companions are accosted by two keepers demanding the Book of Prophecy, but another keeper (serving the “Well of Shadows”) appears, calling the first ones imposters who are corrupting the city.

Combat ensues!

The city seems to resist the first keepers, but the Well of Shadows keepers flees and the Companions talk the other keepers down, promising to talk to them after the ball.

Most of their weapons are confiscated at the ball, of course. At the party, the Companions overheard Bella and Olisk talking about “false keepers” and Dedrek and Balaren talking about how no one had left the house of the Raven Queen lately…

Tzira presented Dedrek with a shard of the Amethyst Dragon of Tol’Lorathus set in a brooch. Dedrek spoke to Gentoo about his trade negotiations before Tzira regaled him with tales of their adventures. Dedrek also offered one of his daughters in marriage to Gentoo to secure a trade partnership, promising the item the Companions need for the Widow of the Walk in return.

Thorngrim and Naurak spoke with Bella and Olisk about the false keepers. The faction has been known for a while as opponents of Roland, but neither of them knew anything about the Well of Shadows.

There is a toast and Gentoo overcomes a poison. Olisk’s appearance flickered and disappeared, dropping his glass and the poison to the floor. Dedrek calls out for who is responsible for the poison – at which point Prince Roland arrives.

Gentoo and Naurak head to the kitchen to track down the poison while everyone else goes to talk to Prince Roland, whom they easily recognize as the shadar-kai Suth.

Speaking with the Prince, the Companions explain everything to the Prince, who seems predictably bored with his immortality.

Gentoo and Naurak head upstairs to investigate Orsin’s absence to find Thorn attacking Orsin and his minions.

Combat ensues!

Thorngrim, Surina and Tzira talk to the prince and confront his companion Kuniri as not being alive, at which point the creature grins impossibly wide and its eyes flash like a fox and it disappears – it was an illusion. Roland says that if this is an illusion, then the real Kuniri (or Irinuk) is back at the palace with all of the Prince’s treasures. The Companions accompany the Prince to exit the ball, but one of Midnight’s Own appear and sets off an explosive vest, killing many guests.

Everyone survives, however, and they use the Prince’s ability to travel through the walls of the city, but the Book of Prophecy is gone when they arrive at the Deathless Palace.

Naurak and Gentoo are able to kill Orsin and scared off his allies. Taking Thorn with them, they head off to the palace as well.

At the Palace, the Prince leads Tzira, Surina and Thorngrim to the Hall of Shadows where he keeps his collection of items. The black stone doors to the hall have been thrown open…

Thorn attacks Gentoo. Combat briefly ensues until Thorn is sequestered. They then attempt to teleport to the Palace, appearing above it and falling on the roof.

In the Hall of Shadows, the Companions find Machtiel lost and they head to Kuniri’s tower.

Breaking into the Palace through a window, Naurak and Gentoo move through a hot, middle-eastern style room, presumably of the ambassador from the City of Brass. A symbol of an eye shrouded in flames (matching the ring found at Deleris’s with the Vecnan Doctirne).

The Companions rejoin each other and race to Kuniri’s tower, finding the gray-haired older man, but with glimmering fox eyes. He’s holding a sheathed sword whose hilt resembles Calambrin, but is a black angel clutching a black stone. He stands before a portal showing a city with buildings stretching from every direction: the planar city of Sigil. Kuniri’s rings flash and five slaads jump forth.

Combat ensues!

The Companions race through the portal after Kuniri, but lose him in the city of Sigil – apparently he headed off to the Lady of Pain’s tower. Surina contracted chaos phage during the fight.

The Companions returned to Gloomwrought to wrap up with Prince Roland.

Heading to the graveyard to rescue Mirana, the Companions stop by the vampire brothel to see if they know anything about the cults residing there, since they include a pack of vampires called the Charnel Things.

They explain that Grigori and Nikolai lead the Charnel Things, feeding on the destitute of Gloomwrought. Apparently Nikolai is the smart one, but he has no tongue and the pair is difficult to bargain with – they can only be bribed with food.

The Companions, unwilling to just toss some unfortunates to the vampires, decide to take their chances in a negotiation. Encountering the brothers in the graveyard, the Companions convinced Grigori that they don’t taste very good and clearing out the Vecnites would give him more territory to control. Nikolai intimates that he wouldn’t overthrow his brother, but he wouldn’t attack him either. The group debates playing vampire kingmaker but doesn’t take any immediate action. Surina does announce that she intends to kill Grigori after the Vecnites are destroyed. This news pleases Nikolai.

Nikolai leads us to the Vecnite domain where, shockingly -

Combat ensued!

The Companions defeat the undead banderhobs and the Vecnites, recovering some blank parchments that required a special candle to make the ink appear.

One of the scrolls read: I’ve just received word from my spies in the Drowned Ward that the Six have arrived in the city. Our master must have the woman who is with them—Mirana. He bids you capture her and hold her until further notice. See that she is not killed.

Another read: It seems that in order to disguise itself from our agents, the Blade of Kas has transformed itself into an axe. My associates in the City of Brass tell me that Bashamgurda has acquired the weapon and is seeking something called the Kulkor Obelisk in exchange for it. I have seen where Rolan keeps this obelisk, and I am negotiating with him in an effort to acquire it.

A final scroll read: The Hand has been recovered and provided a wellspring of information on these so-called heroes, which we are now calling “the Six.” Assuming that the Six managed to put down the Prince of Frost, it is more important than ever that we stop them and secure the Name. I shall advise you further when I learn more.

The Companions head to the crooked tower of Deleris a’Lindesta, the Sage of History, to ask about the origin of Prince Roland, the Sire of Shadows. A grey-eyed eladrin who is clearly insane greets them afte they knock. The eladrin claims to know little about Roland’s history, but he’s hides something behind his madness.

He shared little before Tzira set off the magical alarms upstairs and caused the insane eladrin to summon demons and attack the Companions.

Combat ensues!

The Companions barely manage to defeat his demons and knock the eladrin unconscious.

The Companions debate opening the letter for the Sire of Shadows when a random passerby saw the bodies and ran for more guards. Thorngrim noticed that the real guards had tattooed eyelids and the “guards” they had just dispatched did not, so the Companions decided to attempt honesty…

The Companions actually manage to convince the guard of the truth, though the head guard Jazir says that the situation still needs to be investigated fully. He releases them and says he will contact them later.

Thorngrim noticed three people whispering to themselves watching the situation and snuck over to eavesdrop. The trio was debating whether the Companions would be good “candidates,” concluding that they would indeed be suitable. The men had worn faces and calloused hands from a life of labor, and don’t seem particularly sophisticated. One of the men is sent to report to “Tasmin.” Thorngrim attempted to tail the one sent to report.

While carrying the bodies out of the alley, one of the guards is attacked and a sling is shoved into Plovian’s hand – the guards called out and attacked the Companions, but they were able to capture who set them up and convince the guards of their innocence.

Apparently, the attacker was from “Midnight’s Own,” a peasant rebel group known for causing trouble.

Thorngrim follows one of the conspirators into the Drowned Ward into an unused warehouse reeking of fish. A shadow-born elf approached the conspirator Thorngrim followed, calling in “Colin” and asking what happened. Colin explained that the Companions fought some Deathless Guards (he didn’t know the details) and then set them up to be attacked again. The elf approved, saying that should set them on the path to fighting Roland.

The elf also asked about Colin’s progress on also convincing the other adventurers (the Talon), but they’ve been staying in the tavern. Colin then left to report for his shift at the docks, and everyone echoed the cry “Make them pay!”

After giving a rousing speech, the conspirator who stayed to watch the fight with the guard appeared and whispered into the elf’s ear, darkening his mood. The elf dismissed the congregation. Colin, the conspirator and the elf (Tasmin) continue talking about their nefarious plans for arson, theft and vandalism. They also remain committed to trying to turn the Companions against Roland and his guard. They also debate interfering with an execution of “Noristro” tomorrow. After they left, Thorngrim checked out the warehouse but wasn’t able to find anything incriminating.

Back at the inn, the proprietor tells the Companions about the history of the city of Gloomwrought, how it was born from nothing and people came to settle later. Roland has been ruling the city for at least 600 years. The keepers have been in the city almost from the beginning, but only the Widow of the Walk knows all about the city. Driven mad by the death of her five children who were killed in battle when Roland came to power. The Companions also find out that Noristro is being executed because he made an enemy of Olisk Carrad.

Tzira is able to open the missive for Prince Roland: Prince Rolan. The Raven’s Wing is compromised. Someone has been sending false letters on your behalf. We have a lead on the traitor and are attempting to capture him. Send no further messages via our couriers until you have confirmation from me. ~Bella, the Black Feather.

The Companions went to Harskell’s Emporium to pick up the invitations to the ball and were able to get one for the Talon. They also purchase a variety of extravagant costumes for the ball as well.

They then go to the Deathless Guard to find out about Noristro and share the information they have on Midnight’s Own. They find out that Noristro is being held by House Gorad (a merchant family), apparently for simply not having the appropriate permits to conduct business. The Guard can’t help the Companions get to him.

They next head to the Raven’s Monger next to set up an appointment with Bella. Explaining the situation to her, she revealed that the traitor was “Kedrith,” whom they have captured. She took the letter for the Sire of Shadows and the Companions offered to deliver it for her, but she said she needed to debate that, suspicious of Tzira’s Fleetfoot connections.

She also mentioned that a sage of history, Dalarus Alendestra, might know the Prince’s name.

Bella takes the Companions to speak with Kedrith, a shadowborn dwarf. Under duress, he reveals that he was secretly and magically contracted by a member of Roland’s household and given money and an envelope of instructions. He was also specifically instructed to eliminate the Companions when they arrived.

Recovering his instructions from his quarters, the Companions find 200 platinum pieces and the instructions specify that they should be incapacitated and prevented from seeing Prince Roland, but should not be killed. Bella does not recognize the script.

Total Party Treasure: 19,994 gp

The Companions then head to House Carrad to try to get in to see Noristro. The guards at the front gate apparently recognized them, but still made them wait to enter to meet with Olisk, who has apparently been waiting for us.

He reveals that Noristo matters little to him and he might be freed. Olisk explains that Kuniri, a member/advisor of Roland’s household that has been undermining the city, and Olisk’s influence. He wants Kuniri removed from the picture. Kuniri is apparently working with Prince Roland to siphon life from the Prince’s daeva consort Feria (the Shadow Angel).

Heading back to the inn, Chance is waiting for us at the inn to report that some frog-like creature kidnapped Mirana. Heading back to the boat to talk to Marek and get some guidance on our course of action, he tries to conceal that he knew Feria but wasn’t able to. She is apparently a “troubled soul” in risk of being reborn as a rakshasa.

Following some tracks and talking to witnesses and guards, the Companions follow the banderhob (the frog-creature) to an abandoned opera house in the Drowned Ward. Apparently the opera house is infamous as where the shadow operas were once held. Apparently it is now the den of the Tenebrous Cabal.

Opening the doors, the Companions are attacked by the shadows, scouring them with cold and necrotic energy. Walking to the stage, Surina calls out for Mirana and a deep voice responds: “Who intrudes upon the House of Shadows?” A shadowy figure denies kidnapping Mirana. He was honest about not having kidnapped her, but was hiding something regarding other groups that used banderhobs.

Combat ensued!

The shadow creatures were defeated (after the swallowed both Plovian and Naurak) and the Tenebrous Cabal revealed that a cult of Vecna had been slaying the banderhobs and reanimating them. They also healed the Companion’s wounds to some degree as an apology for not cooperating before. The shadows coalesce into a rode of Amor of Night, which Plovian took.

Talking with the prisoners of the Prince of Frost, the Companions discovered that many of them had been captured for their knowledge of Raven Queen, or the locations where important artifacts are held, like the Vault of the Drow.

Veil takes Gentoo aside to offer to help restore his hand if they Companions will talk to one of his associates in the Shadowfell…

The Companions drop of Quellena at Astrazalian and then on to Gloomwrought, an ominous, gothic city. They pull up to the public docks and the harbormaster marches up on board.

160 gp spent on docking fees (plus generous bribes). Remaining Treasure: 17,310 gp

The harbormaster (Kumorn) recommends the Companions contact House Harskel to try to get into the palace to talk to the Sire of Shadows.

Walking through the city, the Companions pass by some keepers and are able to confirm that they are not recognized. They continue through the city to a building in the Fettered Ward with a red door, shaped like a mouth. It contains a brothel apparently staffed with vampires.

The madame introduces herself as Lareen and invites the Companions into the back. She explains that her organization (apparently in the service of Kas, an old servant of Vecna with a grudge) opposes Vecan and would be happy to help the Companions if they continue to fight against Vecna. She explains that the Sword of Kas would make it possible to prevent Vecna from discorporating and allow his destruction. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know where the sword is. Lareen offers what aid and knowledge she can provide in the defeat of Vecna.

She also offers to make Gentoo a vampire to restore his arm. He accepts, of course.

“You have your arm back, but your dick is ours!”

Leaving the Fettered Ward in Gloomwrought and returning to the market ward, the Companions are divided when the walls of the city separate them into two groups and the cobblestones form enormous golem-like creatures and some gargoyles came to life.

Combat ensues!

When the fight turned against them, the gargoyles fled. One gargoyle who had been watching the fight explained that the Raven’s Wing had sent them to take care of us, at the behest of the Sire of Shadows.

Going inside a nearby inn, the Companions found the Falcon and her crew… Surina, suffering from the gloom’s amnesia, had an entertaining encounter with the Falcon.

After hearing everything the Companions had done, the Falcon explained that she had heard she was fated to break the Sword of Unmaking as well (furthering the rivalry with Surina). She also gave advice on how to speak with the Sire of Shadows: apparently House Harskel is hosting a masquerade in a few days that the Sire should be attending.

If the Companions want to sneak in, the Falcon recommended going to Slippery Trip’s.

Finally, the Falcon explained that the Raven’s Wing is a neutral third party, a courier group that relates information around the city, often in the Sire of Shadow’s name. The Companions are suspicious that the Raven’s Wing may be working on its own now.

Back outside, Gentoo brokers an alliance with Gulgar, the gargoyle that had been watching the Companions. In exchange for attempting to destroy the Kulkor Obelisk (which keeps the gargoyles bound to the city and subservient).

The Companions head to Harskel’s Emporium and manage to secure invitations (pending confirmation of details) based on a story about the Aldorian family wanting to do business in the city. Gentoo spread rumors to that effect to further support the cover story, though while he’s doing that Surina attempts to intimidate/seduce the commander of the Crimson Guard.

A shadar-kai with a cloak of raven feathers walks in, the inn falling quiet. He grabs a notice off the mast and heads out, after looking at the Companions. He is apparently Orsen, Marshall of the Crows, leader of the Brotherhood of Crows. He used to be part of the order of the Raven Queen, but was dissatisfied with how things were run and left, now operating like a terrorist.

Going to another inn, two figures ran past the Companions – a member of the Deathless Guard chasing a courier from the Raven’s Wing. They run into an alleyway, which turned out to be a trap with more waiting Deathless Guard. They don’t seem to be acting with full authority for some reason…

Combat ensues!

The courier died, but managed to hand off a scroll case to the Companions, saying “For the Prince’s eyes only…”

The Companions recoup for a moment and prepare to assault a small god’s lair: the Prince of Frost…

Stepping into the throne room, the Prince of Frost welcomes the Companions, asking what they want and about his minions. He revealed that he had actually started as a low-level eladrin knight the Companions had fought earlier but had been hurtled back in time when they had scattered everyone through the ages.

The Prince offered the Companions a deal: let him see the book and he can offer them nearly anything they want. He asserted that he had no intention of destroying the world, that was Vecna’s plan and that deal has ended.

The Companions obviously don’t accept his offer, and combat ensues!

During the fight, Tzira and Gentoo fell into the Font of Roses and had a vision of tattooed eladrin (including Naivara’s father) asking them why they were there and what right they had to touch the Font. Tzira explained that the Companions were overthrowing the Prince of Frost, and the eladrin gave their blessing (and confirming the story the Prince of Frost had given about going back in time) and returned them to the fight. Gentoo lost the Orb of Baramas and the Hand of Vecna in the pool, however.

Destroying the Seed of Winter and breaking the Prince’s god-like power, the Companions were able to force him to surrender.

Chrysanthemum Shield is in the Vault of the Drow, in the temple of the priestesses. The Prince explained who had been working with among the drow. He also confirmed that the name of the rahvaasta that has been working behind the scenes is Irinuk.

The Companions spared the life of the Prince of Frost in return for his oaths to never confront us again, or to ally with our enemies.

The Companions offered to return the Prince of Frost’s former prisoners to their homes, with several of them electing to stay with the group on their travels, at least until they do go through their homes.

They also cleaned up the grove and returned to speak with Naivara.

Treasure:
  • A set of divine vestments lined with winter wolf fur (1,500 gp)
  • A golden crown set with moonstones and pearls (2,500 gp) (eladrin in make)
  • A bag of skulls of eladrin.
  • Five mithril longswords worth 500 gp each.
  • 1000 platinum pieces (inscribed with a spider).

  • Three potions of health
  • Sehanine’s Mark of the Dark Moon (level 18) for Tzira
  • +4 rod of sylvan trickery (level 20)
  • crown of command (level 17)

The Companions returned to tell Naivara about the defeat of the Prince of Frost, setting her spirit at peace.

They also return to the firbolg village to tell them about the heroic sacrifice of their chieftans, giving them the corpse of the remorahz to them as a trophy.

The Companions decide to head to Gloomwrought to deal with the Sire of Shadows and the items he has in his possession.

The Companions head into a wintry garden filled with frozen statues – actually frozen creatures bound in permanent ice. They examined one of the statues, trying to figure out how to released the trapped creature inside when the central tree in the guardian warned them not to disturb the “perfection of winter.”

Invoking the Prince of Frost’s name was enough to convince the Companions to destroy the arcane bindings on the statues.

Combat ensues!

The Companions defeated the warped treants and were able to free all of the frozen creatures:
  • Dak, a githzerai
  • Marek, a deva
  • Gendar, the drow alchemist from Thunderport
  • Quelenna, an eladrin apparently connected with the Summer Queen
  • Mirana, everyone’s favorite emo girl
  • Osrik, a dwarf
  • Vale, a morbid human
Thorngrim realized that the empowered sap from the treants could be used to manufacture some potions to heal or empower:
  • 3 daily powers restored (given to Surina, Naurak and Gentoo)
  • 3 healing potions (to restore 25 points each) (given to Tzira, Surina and Naurak)

Quelenna explains that the Font is behind the throne, warning that the Prince of Frost may have tried to seal it off. Mirana asked whether any of the followers of Vecna had been seen in the keep, and explained that she had been captured by the Prince of Frost because of what she knows about the Raven Queen.
